“A night focused on the care-free enjoyment of Black dance music.”
As plentyppl entered it’s second year of events, they wanted to shoot for their next set of promotional content which is where I was looped in.
As usual, we had a briefing call so that I could better understand their project requirements and we agreed on deliverables. The important points to note were:
Obscuring the models’ faces was imperative as the imagery was not to focus on them but on the dance and movement.
Portraying movement with blurred frames.
Composing the photo in-camera as close to the final composition as possible to maximise resolution as these photos would also be used for large print.
A range of compositions as imagery would be used for across social media posts, stories, posters and events websites.
This conversation enabled me to decide what equipment I would need and which lighting techniques to prioritise. Of course, when working with dancers and movement there is only so much that can be planned for and I needed to be able to react in the moment.
As you can see from the results, we were successful in creating some really strong imagery and it’s been brilliant to see them brought to life as posters.
